Hello all-

I am attempting to make an outdoors excursion this weekend and I've chosen Gatineau Park. I am taking the train from Toronto to Ottawa and then renting a car.

Can anyone give me any suggestions re. trails? appropriate wear, etc?

I've been up to Gatineau park a few times, but it was a long time ago and can't really remember the trails I went on.

However, I can say that doing some walking this past weekend in Montreal that the key things this time of year will be layers. Lord knows what the temperature will be this coming weekend, and probably can range from 0c at night to up to 15c during the day.

In the sun this past weekend in Montreal, T-shirts would have been approriate. Then, the temp dropped in the shade, and with the wind, a jacket and sweater was needed.

You were down this past weekend? You shuld have let me know! You could have helped me babysit the godson, who cried for 3 hours and finished up with a finale of up chucking his cereal on my shoe. Good times!

Good hiking boots are a must as any interesting trail will have lots of water and mud.

Some of my favorite trails are around Meech Lake... Wolf Trail would be my pick as it starts with a long, steep climb and you can hike along the ridge in either direction for a long-time until you start to get tired => You end your hike with a long downhill run... Yeah!

Another alternative is to start fro the Champlain Lookout and stay on the trails that run the ridge => These trails should be dryer!

I'm not sure how you would get to the park without a car... hopefully your meeting friends who have a car.

The big advantage to this time of year is that the bugs will not be out yet and the park is closed to mountain biking until mid-May to help control errosion.

No kids yakking on my boots, but I had to cancel my trip... :(

However, I will take note as I plan to reschedule in a week or two - thanks Showdogs1!
