Dear tmmpl-

I'm not a pro on any of the cities you plan to see, but I'd skip Las Vegas (it's just a sprawling, expanding casino city), and see the Sonoran desert in Arizona instead. Take the 3-5 day hike into the Grand Canyon to see Havasu Falls: http://www.pygmyguides.com/html/havasu_falls.html
http://www.havasufalls.net/

Visit Boyce Arboretum, and see the flora and fauna of the desert: http://arboretum.ag.arizona.edu/ Don't underestimate the beauty (or the bite) of the Sonoran!

Oh, and Saguaro cacti, you say it "Sah war oh" (no g)

Hike/fish/camp on Roosevelt lake: www.americansouthwest.net/arizona/roosevelt_lake/

and definately see one or more of the world famous pueblo indian cliff dwellings:
Tonto Nat'l Monument: http://www.nps.gov/tont/
http://www.desertusa.com/ton/

Awesome Mesa Verde:

That's my suggestion!

Miss Helen

While in California, you should be able to find all the nature activities you're looking for at Yosemite National Park.

About Las Vegas, I'd agree with the above. If you want to go to gamble, that's one thing. Just stay on the Strip (Las Vegas Boulevard), and don't worry about the rest of the city. Even on the Strip, though, there's no reason to stay more than two days at the most.

If you want to do outdoorsy stuff then hitting the cities may not be the best thing to do. If you want to do whitewater rafting, then the state of West Virginia is THE best whitewater in the US (the whitewater olympic competitions were held there whenever they were in the US last). You can do camping and horseback riding anywhere in the US-especially where youll be (california/nevada/etc.) There are a ton of open spaces and great camping places in the US. If you do go to vegas-which i think is a kickass place since you seem to want to hit cities as well-you should check out red rock canyons-theyre about 45mins i think from vegas and they are beautiful! Have fun when youre here!!!

It sounds like you really like outdoors activities but all your destinations
are large cities. You should really visit some of our national parks to
see the real America. As above is mentioned, the Grand Canyon,
Yellowstone & the Grand Teton (are close together), and Yosemite in
California. Of course, there are many other national parks--
look at www.nps.gov - look at the map, click on a state and you will
see what's available. I hope you'll check these out-- you'll find
hiking, white water rafting and horseback riding at all of these.
Enjoy your trip and stay safe!
