Hello i'm going to be in SA from september this year after being in new zealand for a while. i'd like to stay in SA for 6-9 months, how much money would i need to have saved (english pounds) to make this possible? i don't want any flights whilst i'm there as i'll just travel by bus and i'm not fussy about where i sleep, just want something over my head and something to eat once a day. any help or suggetions would be great thanks alot
There are lots of threads about costs mate.
Just do a search on the bar at the top.
Obviously hostels are one of the main expenses and from my research so far I reckon ...
Rio $20 US
Iguazu a little less but not much
Bs As $15
Chile seems to be more expensive esp in Patagonia
That will be you staying comfortably in a nice hostel.
I guess food and drink will vary but you seem to be able to eat very very well in Rio and Bs As etc for 5 quid sterling.
I found that lots of the hostel websites guide you on local prices.
For instance, I googled Mellow Yellow in Rio to start with then botafogo hostel which I found gave link after link of help.
Bus journey's seem to be your best option for travel and $40 will get you a long long way, Iguazu to Bs As for example. They often include food and drinks too.
Happy days all round I think.
Most folk reckon a budget of $50 - 60 will see you live very comfortably.
My knowledge may be outdated since it's a few years back that I actually travelled in SA, but Tricky's estimate sounds all right. But it greatly depends on your style of living, the kinds of hostels you go to, your party pattern, etc.
thanks for the quick repsonses, i'll have a look at the cost threads, nice one
Hello, I know this is kind of going off the point slightly but roughly how much money should i budget for each day (not including travel), I know every where is different buy just a rough idea would be really helpful. Thanks Cat
