wind001 has indicated that this thread is about New Zealand

I'd like to know more about the safety in New Zeland, particularly in some big cities as Auckland or Wellington. Is it true that there are some problems or the situation is the same that in Australia?

New Zealand is a very safe country. I felt the major cities to be safe and never felt uncomfortable in any of them. Though in any city there is crime and you should be careful and be aware of your surroundings. Once you leave the cities there were many people hitchhiking and seemed rather normal. Just use your head.

NZ Big cities are just like any other , Use common sense

Don't leave valuables or documents in site , esp in cars
there is always that temptation for low life on easy pickings !
At night stay in well lit areas !
bring a mobile phone if you have one we have GSM and CDMA
systems prepay plans available on both ! If you have a 900 / 1900 / UMTS for gsm you can buy a prepay card from Vodafone NZ for $35 inc some call credit

enjoy your trip

Steve

Yes its safe, but be street smart... as everyone else is saying.

I'd also add be vigilant in places like Queen street (the main drag in Auckland City) when its dark and you are even close to being isolated. In my 23 years here thats the only place I've come close to having problems.

Enjoy your stay!

New Zealand is a wonderful country to visit. Just use a little common sense and enjoy the experience.

In my experience, compared to Australia, New Zealand is even safer for tourists, and Australia is pretty safe. Your biggest risk is falling off a mountain. There are a few social problems in Auckland particularly, but just don't get drunk and antagonise people and you'll be OK.

NZ = safe

The only trouble I heard about was between rival moari gangs. If your not a moari gang member then no worries!

As mentioned in other replies all you need to watch out for is what you would watch out for in any other town or city in the world.

NZ is fantastically safe, as others have said, use common sense ;)

A couple of tips though:

- The car parks for many beauty spots can be remote. They are prime spots for car break-ins - don't leave anything in the car (even hidden).

- Camping - while we all love some free camping, and NZ is full of it, if it says "don't camp" then don't - sometimes it's not so much a land/trespass issue but a safety issue.

NZs big cities aren't nearly as big as most country's. The biggest being Auckland, with a population of 1.5 million roughly. It's definitely a safe country on the whole, just use common sense as always
