Hi I am planning a trip accross the USA (see http://www.travellerspoint.com/forum.cfm?thread=34953&start=1 ) - we want to drive the last park of the trip up the west coast. The original plan was to pick up a car in Vegas then drive to San Diego up the coast to end up in Seattle. However from quotes we have received we have found that the price doubles when dropping a car in a different location.
Would it be viable to fly into Seattle then pick up the car and drive down as far as San Diego, across to Vegas then back to Seattle in 30 days? Does anyone have any advice on the route or if it is even possible?
Thanks in advance.

Perfectly viable - look into driving down the highway 93/95 corridor from WA to Las Vegas, then to San Diego then back to Seattle primarily on the Pacific Coast Highway.
I looked at your other thread and this route would allow Death Valley (which is an awesome drive I'd love to repeat) without going too far out of the way. You could also check out the Black Rock Desert on the way through Nevada. I'd hit the Grand Canyon too on this driving bit if that's a destination you want since there aren't many other affordable ways to get there other than private automobile.
I've driven most of the roads on the west coast extensively, so if you have any specific questions I can help.
Also getting back to your other thread...chain hotels are almost never the cheapest here in the US. You need to find the locally owned motels for the best value (offer cash and you can often score a discount).
Does anyone else have any more advice? How much do you think we could pick up a decent second hand car in Vegas for? Obviously just looking for it to get us from Vegas to Seattle to save the double back that we would do in the hire car.
