i usually just pay with VISA while abroad, as this saves the hassle of getting foreign money and getting used to dealing with foreign notes and coins. It's very easy to just use your card wherever you go, most VISA card readers even list the price in both local currency and your own prefered currency.

He's going to Japan. Although foreign credit cards are gaining much more widespread acceptance there you will definitely need cash. A lot of places (Not just stores) only take cash. As you might have heard elsewhere on this site, Japan is a cash society. If you can make withdrawals with your VISA/MC credit card that's cool but I highly suggest you don't go to Japan only with credit cards and no cash/atm cards.
