I was hoping you can help me. My family is planning a trip to Italy and they will be arriving in Rome on the evening of May 20th. They would like to go to Cinque Terre in the morning. Do you have any recommendations as to how exactly to get there, is there an easy way, train, fly, etc? Also, once they get there, should they make a certain town their home base? They need to also get back to Rome by 1 PM on May 25...do you think they should get back to Rome the night before or is there a fast train they should take in the morning?
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
you can stay in one of the 5 places or choose a bigger city to move from. It could be Genova or La Spezia, and from there you can reach 5 terre by train.
From Rome, I think the best way to get there is by train. Look at this web site www.trenitalia.it and check the train schedule yourself.
hope this was useful.
Take a look at http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html
I always forget the names of these villages , but from Rome to La Spezia is about 4 hours. In my opinion flying from Rome to Pisa is too much of a hassle, and not necessary, as the train will be just as quick. With this site you will be able to take a look at the timetables.
I would recommend coming back the day before you have to leave. First of all they would need to leave CT early enough to make it back to Rome, but you would also want to have some extra time in case of delays, missing a connection or something like that, and that added to the time they would need anyway, I think it is a too big a risk to take. (esp. if they would need to catch a flight)
