I'm leaving for my RTW trip in three weeks and plan on mostly using atm's. I am looking, however, for a second credit card for when I run out of money. I notice in the fine print that most charge an additional 2% on top of visas 1% for purchases abroad. Has anyone found a good visa or mastercard without the extra charge? Thanks - eric
Don't know if you'll find a credit card free of charges.
I'm not sure they all use percentages - some use a fixed fee, like 2$ per transaction. This way it helps to draw more money out at a time.
I do not know about other countries, but in Malaysia, merchants seldom charge extras for purchases on credit cards. I guess they must have accounted that into their list prices or they simply absorbed the charges. Unless, the profit margin of the merchant is so low that it is not wise to absorb the commission charge by credit card companies. An example of merchants charging extra for credit cards purchases are computer stores (in Malaysia) because their profit margin is really low. Normally, merchants who are charging extra (2-3%) will inform you of the charges when you pay by credit card.
So, if Malaysia is one of stops in your RTW trip, feel free to use your credit cards here. They are widely accepted.
How well is "Diners Club international" card doing out there
