Out of curiosity, what is the best rail pass to get if i will be in 3 different countriies over 2 months?I will be in Austria,Italy and France. Is there a pass that can allow me to pay ahead and use the countries trains? Or is it better to just buy the passes as you need them in the country? Thanks for the help for the amateur.
It all depends on how much traveling you'll be doing within Austria, France and Italy. Do you intend on staying in large cities for a given amount of time before heading to your next destination? A flexi-pass may be for you. If you're sightseeing and will be in a new city every day then the consecutive day pass will probably be best.
The Eurail Select pass is a pass with 5, 6, 8, or 10 days of travel within a 2-month period within 3 bordering countries. You might be tempted to purchase these passes because they seem to be exactly what you're looking for. However if you're going to be using the train alot it will be cheaper to get a 2 month Eurail global pass for $945. With it, you have unlimited travel in most western European countries for 2 months (60 days). If you purchase two separate 10 day Eurail select passes it'll cost you $800 and for only 20 days total!
I'd go with the Eurail global pass for a trip that long.
