Hi there

My partner and I are travelling to Sri lanka next February and was wondering whether someone experienced in Sri Lankan delights could help us with an itinery!?

We are looking to stay for 2 weeks and want to know the best places to see/to stay and to experience. We are on a backpackers budget but want to experience everything we can.

If anyone has any information or can help us with a plan of action for 2 weeks, we would very much appreciate it!

Many thanks.

Hi,

Sri Lanka is very beautiful and there are so many things to do & see there. We stayed 3 weeks, spent a good time on the beach near Hikkaduwa and then went on a tour across the island:

Hikkaduwa - Galle - Yala National Park - World's End/Horton Plains - Nuware Eliya (hill country and tea plantations) - Sigirya (huge rock) - Polonnaruwa (ancient ruins and temples) - Dambulla (famous cave temples) - Kandy (nice town and Buddha's tooth relic) - Pinnawela (Elephant Orphanage) - Hikkaduwa.

What we liked most is:

- spectacular "World's End" & Horton Plains
- the huge Sigirya rock (kind of a small Uluru (Ayers Rcok) with fantastic views
- the ruins of Polonnaruwa
- the elephants of Pinnawela
- driving through the green hills near Nuwara Eliya

Filika - Best regards,

Silke

Thank you for your reply!

Is it easy to get around in Sri Lanka? Do you think it is best to book hostels/hotels before arrival or is that easy to do when we are there?

I guess we will arrive in Colombo, can you suggest what we should do when we arrive? Train? Taxi? Bus?

Many thanks again, much appreciated.

I was there about two weeks ago and two hours after we took off five bombs went off in Colombo! It is a beautiful place, nice beaches, not much visible poverty, not nearly as much pollution as India. I only spent a few days there and before I took off I wished I could stay there longer. Watch you @ss though! It seemed perfectly safe and normal when I was there but soon after BABOOOOOOM! Not trying to scare you away just be informed and careful. Good luck!

Hi,

from Colombo there are several express buses and trains leaving for Kandy, Hikkaduwa or other destinations, getting around shouldn't be a problem.
We booked a guesthouse in Hikkaduwa in advance and they picked us from the airport so there was no need for us to stay in Colombo. But I'd say it's not really necessary to book in advance, you'll always find something - on the other hand it's kind of convenient when you arrive and already know where you are going to spend your first night, especially if you arrive in the evening.
A very nice Guesthouse south of Hikkaduwa (Thiranagma) is "Palm Beach" - great beach, tasty food and very friendly people:
