Sounds like a waste of money but I guess it depends what they offer you. I was working live-in in London getting GB250 p/w plus tips of about GB50 p/w, if they can offer you better money than that then I would go for it. Also if they offer you a job in London I would consider taking it up because live-in jobs in London can be a lot harder to find.

As for arriving in November, I found that the best time of year to be looking for hospitality work because everyone is looking for staff for the Xmas parties and holidays.

Is GB@250 per week the standard wage??? Because the travel program says i would be earning between GB140-GB160 per week, and that's a bit of a difference.

oh yeah it's spring. slipped there.

anto, i'm on a working holiday visa too!

i thought of signing up with an agent too, before i came. but the agent didn't seem to know what was going on, cldn't even tell me what sort of job i wld be getting here, and i didn't get to choose which part of uk i'd get to go either. hope ur agency isn't as dodgy.

i suppose with the agency, you'll feel a bit more assured since the job and accomodation is guaranteed, especially if u r coming here all alone with no friends. are u?

eventually i didn't sign up with the agency 'cos of how inefficient they were when they were supposedly reputable. plus i had a friend who agreed to let me bunk in with him for a while, until his girlfriend threw a hissy fit and demanded that i move out. and no it's not bcos she felt threatened by me or anything, but cos of some childish bickering that happened. lastly, friends who'd also been on the visa say it's not that tough at all getting a job here.

altho i might beg to differ, cos i've been here a month alrdy and have yet to land some work. ahha. maybe it's cos i'm in liverpool where job opportunities are more rare, and i cld be too picky and slack in my hunt. :)

oh yeah, the minimum wage here is 5.25pounds per hour or something.

I think I was on a good wicket getting GB250 p/w, this was before tax as well.

miss melpunk,
I will be travelling alone. This travel agency that i am dealing with also seems really dodgy, they don't seem to be very knowledgable about the whole thing and always provide vague answers. So i am fairly unsure of the whole scenario, but i've still got a while yet, so i will see what happens.

ikey,
The GB140-GB160 is cash in the hand, so i suppose that somewhat equates.

well, if they're gonna be so dodgy, i say they don't deserve the business!

anyways, good luck planning, and do drop me a line when u eventually make it here. (:

Sounds like you were definately! Most of the people I got to know in London were on about 150GBP per week...

150 GBP??? You can do better than that. There was an Australian who worked in my office through an agency, he just hung around for about three months and then dissappeared - he would have been on about 200 a week.

You definately can get better wages for other types of jobs like office admin... but I found for a live in pub job, it was generally about 150GBP plus accomm and meals.

In London they are on almost every street corner, can't remember the other cities though. Targeted at Australians, South Africans & Kiwis.
