aharrold45 has indicated that this thread is about Australia

I am trying to find a low budget hotel which is in the centre of Melbourne or at least close to most of the major attractions (it is an educational trip to Melbourne to see all the things of tourist interest). I am looking for somewhere that could handle 20 people, triple rooms are ok or a hostel which has a small amount of dorms and small dorm rooms. The place can't be anymore than $30AUD per person per night. I personally wouldn't mind a hostel but some of the people (mainly old students past their used by date) are not keen on the idea of hostels so a budget hotel would be better.

If you have any budget hotel suggestions that have twin or triple rooms I could look at or small hostels that are conveniently located in Melbourne please let me know so I can look in to them.

Thanks for any suggestions you can offer.

I don't know about hotels (apart from maybe hotel bakpak, which I know nothing about apart from that it seems cheap and is half hostel, half hotel), but the Greenhouse would be my first pick for a hostel. Its location is superb and its reputation is excellent. I have visited the hostel but haven't stayed there.

I second Peter.... in my opinion, the Greenhouse is by far the best hostel in Melbourne.

Also you might want to contact Rydges. They have a student/backpacker style cheap hotel just out of Melbourne, which is very clean and has double/tripple rooms for about $80 per night. I have dealt with them extensively in the past (booking accommodation for international nurses arriving in Australia on working holidays) and they will often negotiate a lower room rate per night for groups. Give them a call as you may be able to get double rooms for $60-$70 per night or triples for $75-$90. (I have in the past when booking for 10-30 people)

Oh... I also forgot to mention that although the hotel in Preston is located about 15mins from the center of the city, they run a free shuttle bus service all day and evening. Plus the place has a pool, bar and some great rec rooms with pool tables.
