Travel Forums Off Topic have you ever responded to the travel companion postings?

just curious.

has anyone ever responded to the ads in the 'travel companions' section of the forum?

i was just thinking how there's such a huge element of risk, going on a trip with a complete stranger, where the worst case scenario is your companion turning out to be a PSYCHO, or pervert. LOL.

okay, maybe i'm just being paranoid or too imaginative.

but it wld be interesting to hear about any dodgy/fun/scary/exciting experiences.

do respond!

I prefer to just meet people, while I travel.
Some of them turn out, to be travel companions.

I have but not as an accomplice. I travel when I want to travel and that's what I go by. However if someone might be in the same places as I am during a certain time I'll leave a comment and inform them that I'm down for hanging out (If they're interested). Either that or I just make suggestions

I advertised for someone to walk the West Highland Way with me. I was anticipating having to sift through the multitude of replies received from up and coming supermodels desperate to experience the beauty of nature and escape the clutches of their fathers who are trying to send them to the Lausanne Clinic for Nymphomaniacal Disorders.

I'm still waiting for a response.

It wasn't on this site, but I met up with a travel companion to go on a trek in Siberia. Worked out great, we both wanted to do the same thing, so we arranged to do it at the same time and work together, share expenses, etc.

I don't see anything strange about it, no one I knew at home wanted to travel to Russia, so may as well find someone else.

I plan to do it again for some sailing adventures!

Not on this site, but I've met people for travel on craigslist before and it's always worked out fine.

I never put myself in a situation where I have to RELY on someone else, so even if I meet a complete psycho worst case is I strike out on my own and I won't starve/be stranded/etc.

It's extremely difficult to meet people IRL with the same travel aspirations, so places like this are valuable and I'd have no hesitation teaming up with people from here (in fact I hope to at some point). The longest I've been able to convince an existing friend from the "real world" to travel with me is a month and then I had to work even harder to keep us from blowing our money staying in HOTELS (notice the lack of an 'S') every night.
