Does anyone know what the deal is with tipping in Japan?

Is it customary? Do people do it etc?? And if so, where is it requried?

Also I am staying in Shinjuku....any suggestions on where to go or what to see? I don't have much time but like to see all that I can.

Cheers

Nope, tipping is not customary at all, anywhere, in Japan. We did leave tips and in some places there seen very surprised.

Actually, i've tried tipping and generally they don't understand. I had one guy run down the street to give me my change. It was pretty funny.

Yeah I would agree with that. It's not common at all. If you want to tip your maid at your hotel, etc leave it in an envelope. Instead of tips you could always give them a gift from your homeland.
