Hi guys,
Last week i booked to join my friends on their year long trip to Australia (via Singapore). Obviously i've not left myself much time to get things sorted, so i've got a few questions...

Firstly i wanted to ask about bank accounts?
since i'll be working/living in Melbourne i'll obviously get myself an Ozzy account but my English account is with Natwest.
I'm guessing its too late to open a new account with Nationwide (i keep hearing this would have been the best option) so that i could avoid the dreaded charges... so what would be the best way to withdraw cash from my English account once i'm in Oz?
I don't really want to be carrying travellers cheques around with me, it'd be much more practical to just use my card at an atm machine.

My flights are booked, hotel sorted for Singapore, hostel sorted for Melbourne, WHVisa applied for & been assured should receive confirmation within next few days.

Can anyone think of anything i might have forgotton to do before i leave? I'm getting a check-up at the doctors & dentist, also booked in for a sight test cos i wear one-a-day lenses & so need to get monthlies as don't want to lug about 365 pairs of contact lenses!
Cancelled all my memberships/contracts (mobile phone, gym, car insurance etc...)

Any help or advice would be really appreciated :)

Katie xx

Alrighty Katie.

You've done more in the last week than I have in the last 2 months preparing for my trip to Oz so don't think I'm one to give advice.

Once you have your Oz bank account open can you not then do an electronic transfer of all your funds into the new account? Maybe just bring some travellers cheques and cash to tide you over until this is possible because I expect the bank charges will be a killer.

Maybe also prepare and print out some copies of an up to date CV. Depending on what type of work you are looking for while you are there I suppose.

Great last minute decision to head away. Have a great time.

Heres another thread that discusses the banking topic. Seems EFT and online banking are all pretty simple.

Hey, I had a natwest bank account back home and have opened a NAB account here. I was told by both banks it is not possible to do online transactions so I have been withdrawing money from natwest account using ATMs. I guess the best way to avoid big charges from the UK account is to withdraw the maximum amount u r allowed each day and then pay it in in cash over here.

Looks like u have everything else sorted-Melbourne is great-just dont forget travel insurance!!

Bobby- thanks for all the advice, especially the link to info about bank accounts/transferring money etc..

I rang Nationwide today & i've got an appointment tomorrow to open a Flex-account, they said i can open it there & then, just have to take some ID.
Cards, cheque book etc will arrive within 10days. phew!! Gosh am i glad i asked that question on here

The CV- such a good idea!! Hoping for some admin/office type work but have a media production degree so will also try for some voluntary work in that field too- i wonder if Neighbours need some runners/camera crew?? ;)

Hels- so glad you said Melbourne is great, the girls i'm going with are clueless and decided to go there because in their words "everyone goes to Sydney". haha
Yep travel insurance was booked today!
I'm so glad i had the day off work- managed to sort out so much stuff.

xxxxxxx

Thanks guys, yeah i am working in Oz so will need to set up an Ozzy account once i get there but also planning to do some travelling before i head home (in 12months time). So the Nationwide account will come in useful then.
