Im traveling through China next year, starting in Macau and hopefully ending up Beijing with any luck. apart from Hong Kong and Shanghai, what are the best cities and places to visit if i travel overland, or should i forget it and fly

xi'an... go there. it's the oft-forgotten ancient capital of china, which housed 12 chinese dynasties before they moved the capital to nanjing and beijing (current capital, housed 2 dynasties only, i think)

Hey BFG, well I have not been there yet myself but I am looking to visit this summer.

The route I Was planning on taking was from the east, as that is where I would be entering China from.

But Guilin, is a place that I wanted to visit as it has many beautiful sites and it is not too far I dont think from HK. Aswell as this like Daph said, Xi'an is definitely worth visiting! It was once the capital and it has many sites that you could visit too, including the Terra Cotta warriors!

This site provides more information on the various places you can visit and I have found it extremely useful in devising my plan..

Oh yes, not to forget Yangtze cruise, supposed to be nice...

Thats my plan anyway...Good luck to you!

BTW, I considered overland but then I looked at the distances and thought NOOOO. I think some you should travel overland but some would be too far and would be advisable to go by plane unless you had lots of time! (I took some ideas from the tour that this site offers, its pretty useful!;))

Hi BFG,

China is a huge country, but the train system is really efficient and very affordable. It's comfortable, too, if you travel 'hard sleeper' class. It all depends on how much time you have.

I would recommend going northwest from Hong Kong, through Guilin and Yunnan to Sichuan (great food, pandas, mountains, and the Yangtze cruise). Then north to Xian and/or east to Nanjing, Suzhou, Shanghai and Hangzhou (which the Chinese say is their most beautiful city). Stop at Qingdao, on the Yellow Sea, for the best beer and seafood in China and some nice beaches. Then Beijing.

Of course, that's just the highlights, and that would take 6-8 weeks.

You can finish Macao for one days, if you have no plan to stay in their Casino. And then Shanghai which you cannot miss, about 3 days, including all the sites in Shanghai city or Suzhou gardens. After that, there are two options: go to Xi'an or come to Wuhan, cruise Yangzte river. If you choose the first option, after Xi'an, go to Beijing, spend 3-4 days there and finish. If you choose the 2nd, after you finished cruise in Chongqing (about 3days after you depart from shanghai), you could continue your visit in Xi'an or fly to Beijing from Chongqing.
Good luck
