I didn't know the "Rate It" option was actually live. I remember reading - maybe 6 months or so ago - that it wasn't really being used as it wasn't fully functional.

As a Travel Guru, there's a reason that I haven't been demoted. Can you imagine me as a "Respected Member" ?

Now that you've mentioned this, I have a question in mind. Did you skip Respected Member and got promoted straight to Travel Guru back then?

There are plans for morphing its functionality, mostly because its current form isn't really working. However, the "isn't really working" part is simply people not using it (apparently the little "Rate It!" links with each post are too high a barrier to entry for most people), and has nothing to do with the existing functionality not being, well, functional. :)

These posts add no value to, nor increase the knoweldge of, the reader or the person asking the original question. All they seem to do is increase the number of posts that tally towards "travel guru" status. Couple this with the ability to manipulate the ratings of your own posts, either through real or fictitious members and, presto, instant "travel guru"

Are there really people who do that?
Is there no limit, to how silly people can get?
Sometimes, I wonder, if they should just get rid of these titles. They are fun in a way, but when people start getting so serious about them.... On the other hand, getting rid of them would in a way be pandering to the whingers.

Unfortunately there are such individuals. I think it's pretty sad if all they can hope for in life is "Travel Guru" status on Travellerspoint.com

I looked into the amount of ratings a couple of months ago, and was sad to discover that barely anyone makes use of the rating feature.

Sander, when I became a member, it took me a while, to notice the ratings button. Also, I often thank people for their help, but completely forget to give them a rating. Sometimes I remember days later, and go back and give a rating, but often I forget.
Maybe it would be an idea, to prompt people, in some way, about if they wish to rate the posts, in a thread.

Also, I am a member of another site, that only allows me to give a person a rating, if I rated 10 people, since the last time I rated that person. Would that be a way to reduce the number of incidents of people gaming the system? I used to think it was a werid restriction to put on people, but looking at what is happening here TP, I am starting to see the point.

Just a comment
Having been on the wrong end of the why should u be a travel guru conflict before, I am glad to see this one is out in the open. One has no chance at deciding on how and/or how much to relate to certain individuals, in the future, when one does not even know who these individuals are. Also, if the people involved are nameless and faceless, how can one assess if they are ones one respects enough, to pay any attention, to their opinion, at all.

James
Of course u could not be a respected member. I think a whole new category should be created, for u.
