Just an idea - as I've been flicking through all the forum threads it seems that there are a lot of travel health questions that pop up. Things like questions on Malaria tablets, travelling with vitamins, carrying insulin, reciprocal healthcare agreements etc
Just wondered if it might be worth adding another forum specifically for travel health related stuff?
For what its worth when those with authority see this, I reckon it could be added within the Travel Gear forum, to make a Travel Gear & Health forum. It would seem to go, as medical kits would be part of travel gear if people carry those, and the travel gear forum isn't overly busy.
The problem with this kind of a forum is that people might start taking advice given by people that don't have the qualifications to give it for instance on drugs etc...I think that its a risky area personally.
It's an interesting idea though...maybe if it came with like a health warning or something...?
Im with mim - giving advice is great and l know Isa has given me great health advice in the past on various issues (like when l hurt my back!) but unless you are medically qualified or know the persons medical background giving advice on such matters is risky?
But for general questions like first aid kits, which jabs are required for travel to certain destinations or maybe even the legalities of travel to certain countries with meds l like the idea mojorob has suggested for incorporating it into the Travel Gear Forum?
FYI; there is a thread stickied on top of the GT-forum in which you can volunteer useful information. For the rest, I'm with Purdy and Mim; a forum like that would create the appearance of experthood, which is risky in all kinds of ways (think liability suits; I'm sure Peter and Sam wouldn't want that).
I'm with Mim, Heather and Niels on this one. It is a good idea - one that I like, but the potential for liability suits would be vast. As one who answers many of the health-related questions across the forums, I try to make sure to "cover my ass" with "in my opinion" type comments. (I'm not sure I have done that with all, but may have come close.)
One person's experience will, most likely, not mimick another's. Answering a thread here and there is giving personal opinions and experiences. Having a forum to cover such issues would, again - most likely - require members who are in the medical profession to be the ones answering.
As an example, ScubaBoard.com has a forum covering health issues for divers. They even have a section called "Ask Dr. Decompression". The Moderator of the forum is an MD specializing in dive medicine. It is the one way they "cover their ass" in answering health-related questions and dedicating a complete forum to such queries.
Makes perfect sense... and the last thing I'd want is for a liability suit for TP! It's a pitty that we live in such litagous times
I wonder if like mim suggested, it could be possible to have such a forum, provided it was plastered with warnings etc... still I totally understand if it's just too big a risk to take!
