Hi, i'm leaving next week to travel for 6months in Central and South America. I'm going alone and would love to get involved in some volunteer work for a month or so perhaps in Peru (I'm thinking Cusco...) which would be the middle of my trip. Is it possible to get involved once out there without setting anything up in advance?
I haven't had the chance to sort anything out and only have a week left in England before heading to my first desitnation Costa Rica to learn some Spanish.
Any advice on how to go about getting involved in volunteering would be appreciated!
In Cusco there are many projects which you can help with your work. I suggest to do the arrangements once there, it seems you don't have much time to sort it out in advance anyway.
A nice project that I know is the Niños Hostel, they support street children. You will see that's an issue in Cusco city.
Have a safe trip,
Thanks Ivan, i'll do some research once i get there. Thanks!
Here are some volunteer orgs in Cusco:
They are all free to participate, but you will have to support
yourself (i.e. food & board) while you are out there.
fairplay-peru.org can give you contacts for finding a homestay
in Cusco which would be good for your Spanish.
I don't think you need much setting-up to arrange to volunteer
with these orgs. You can certainly do it out there, email them
a week or two before you get to Cusco.
There are some free volunteer ops in other South/Central America
countries listed here: www.volunteersouthamerica.net
