Hi!!
I'm planning to travel to Osaka autume in this year.
I'll spend 1 week, so I will be able to go another places around Osaka.
I want to get an advice about how many days I should stay in Osaka and where I must visit.
I also want to go Kyoto and Nara. Is that possible to go there within a week??

and should I study Japanese?? I only can speak 'Arigato'..
cheap accomodation and transportation... Any information about Japan will be helpful..

Thanks~

Hi,

I never visited Osaka when I was in Japan although passed through it.

With regard to Kyoto, yes - if you can visit it do so! We had 3 nights there and did a day tour one day followed by our own exploring.

In Kyoto try to visit at night so you have an opportunity to visit the geisha district. In Kyoto you also have the Golden Pavilion and more temples than you care to imagine.

Nara is home to the largest wooden temple (if memory serves me right) but my preference on the tour was Kyoto.

If you have time you might also want to consider a trip to Mount Koya where the monks stay and you can stay the night there in the temples.

Any more thoughts just ask.

Unless you have a particular reason for wanting to stay in Osaka you could easily base yourself in Kyoto for the whole week. There's plenty to see in Kyoto - I'd bargain on three days to see the best of the main sights. From Kyoto it would be easy to do a daytrip to Nara and a daytrip to Osaka (it would take you less than an hour to get to each). As op says - staying overnight in a temple on Koyasan is definitely an experience. It's also doable from Kyoto.
As for accomodation, I've heard good things about K's house in Kyoto (haven't stayed there though): http://kshouse.jp/kyoto-e/index.html
Traveling around shouldn't put too much of a dent in your budget - Osaka to Kyoto will cost you about 400 yen one way. Subways - 200/300 yen per trip. In Kyoto you can buy an all day bus pas for around 1,000 yen.

Pick up a lonely planet guide, or equivalent travel guide... most have a phonetic list of common Japanese terms and questions. Best be prepared.

I would definitely recommend staying in Kyoto rather than Osaka. Osaka was one of the least remarkable cities in Japan that I visited, whereas Kyoto was probably my favourite. Kobe is also worth a day trip.
