Has anyone here explored northern Peru? I would like to know if they recommend taking some time up to visit these areas, and, if so, where and how long should be spent to get a good idea of the place, including times required for transport.
I visited Piura, Tumbes and Chiclayo; the latter I warmly recommend, but not longer than maybe four days or so; it's your typical SA city, has a very nice market, and isn't half as dirty as nearby-ish Trujillo. Tumbes is nice in off-season.
Around Chiclayo there's a number of excavations going on; some are in pretty bad shape, but it's interesting nevertheless, esp. the museums (don't recall names; have a look in your guidebook).
Naturewise, the Amazon inlands of northern Peru are said to be interesting, but it's pretty hard to get there, and not entirely risk-free, because of sendero luminoso-remnants that are reportedly still active there.
Has anyone been to Keilap? Is it worth going all the way to see it and are there other things to do in the vicinity? Also I am independent traveller, so are there any tours of the local mountains at reasonable prices?
