Hi! I need to travel from San Jose, Costa Rica to Quito at the beginning of October, and return at the end of December. Are there any buses or trains that will take me? What about sea travel? I'm looking for transportation that is cheaper than flying, but would still be safe for a woman travelling alone.
Thanks so much! This will be my first time to Central/South America, so I would really appreciate any help that anyone could offer.
Your only way is by plane.... no transport ships go from those countries and by car or bus you would take 2 months!!!! its also impossible!!!
I agree, the only way is by plane.
You can travel by sea on a so-called tramp. However, it's erratic and for sure not recommendable to a single woman.
Ergo, if you have to go to Quito from San Jose (Costa Rica), follow aforementioned travel method.
i've heard of people driving through central america and then shipping their vehicles to Ecuador. so it definitely could be done by boat. its more of a cost issue than anything.
train is virtually non existent for passengers. the problem is between Panama and Colombia... as far as buses go.
try and see if you can get flights in and out of different places besides San Jose and Quito. Liberia in Costa Rica might be cheaper. You could try flying into Guayaquil, Ecuador.
you may check on Copa/Panama Aireline, the are flying to Ecuador.
You could take a bus from Guayaquil to Quito.
Flight from San Jose CR to Guayaquil or Quito $ 447
