Quoting Shrinagesh

Usha,

It is not advisable for a girl of your age to travel alone. The risk is always there.
Plan your trip to the detail and dont venture to places where you may be alone and could be victimised.Am sorry that am sounding negative but your safety is more important.
As you are a person of Indian descent, try wearing Indian clothes as much as possible, a pair of glasses( said to help avoid problematic men throughout the world) and a bindi. This could help to an extent.

Good luck!

I respect your concern shringesh but I don't agree. mind the culture difference here shrinagesh. she is 18 but the fact that she is willing to travel alone means that she is quite grown-up. women in India are probably less grown-up at 18? Let her decide for herself. she is an adult because at 18 u just are (it would be different if she was 12). she will make it. otherwise she would not even considered to travel alone. Usha, please go and have fun in lovely India.

Hi;)
I wouldn’t recommend to spend too much time in Jaipur.. I didn’t like it, but maybe others have a different point of view. If you got time try heading to the west towards Pushkar or Jaisalmer – beautiful places:)

I second that. Jaipur is okay for one day for visiting the best spots (like hawa mahal, city palace and the old city). there is much more to explore in Rajasthan;)

a couple of you have said that since usha is indian, she shouldn't worry too much and she'll be safer. i'm planning a similar trip (but i can't go for another year) and i'll be 18 when i go and i don't look indian at all. will i be that much at risk just because i stand out more?

Usha, I will be in the india/nepal/tibet area for around 6 months from around november. When will you be about?

I ask as I am also 18 (but Male) and on my last trip around south-east Asia I met only one person close to my age out of maybe 250 people. Lots of 22/23+ year olds, but not many teenagers. It's nice meeting people your own age aswell.

no, but you will have some hassle always (same as other women solo travellers). but if u are cautious and u don't let yourself in with touts or people that u don't trust, then u will be fine!

Shame! My gf and her mate are thinking of coming over for a while so would have been nice! I also want to do this by myself but I don't mind spending a few weeks holidaying whilst they're here!!

hi sonia,

If u r travelling alone i would advice u to go for some conducted tours from some reputed operators which would be safe, convenient and affordable too. do let me know if u need more info.

I don't agree. that will cost a lot and u will be not as free (besides most touroperators in India are ripping off, especially to foreigners). India is easy travelled independently, also for women alone. I have seen a lot of women in India doing that.

hi wouterrr,

well...its not all true....If ur visiting south india there r many conducted tours which are even affordable and genuinely priced even for the foreigners.. Its true that travelling independently has its own merits but since the girl in question is hardly 18 and travelling alone so conducted tours would be recommended for some parts as these r hassle free.
