Did i sound sarcastic? Not at all dear.... indeed im happy that u have seen and experienced India and indians so closely... You have travelled the length and breadth of india and i have seen u praising India at the various forums... Being an indian i feel proud of U.

Wouterrr is quite right on how to recognise the touts and to stay off them...I myself almost got conned few times in Delhi...thats the place where you should avoid all the autowallahs and people trying to take you to hotels and tours....
Other places in the country are more free from these touts...but it is good to be aware of them by following what Wouterrr has defined...

Its good to book hotels beforehand atleast for the first 10 days and to take the prepaid taxis/autos while travelling to there. If comfortable, you can book further after getting a feel there(though it is advisable to book earlier depending on what season you are travelling on).
India is a safe country to backpack for someone at your age provided you take the usual precautions that single females need to take.... I have seen so many female travellers going around in the country on their own.
