govtintern has indicated that this thread is about USA

I'm going to be interning, unpaid, in Washington, D.C. for 6 weeks this summer and I'm a British citizen. This will be within the 90-day visa waiver period and I'm not getting any money, although it is strictly work. So, do I need a visa? I've had a look around the American embassy website and I can't see any information about it, and I'd rather not phone them and be put on hold for 3 hours or something...I interned last year for a month, unpaid, without a visa and it was okay, but it was in a little town and I was staying with my family, so this is kind of a different situation.
Anyway, any advice you could give me would be fantastic.

The agency or company you are interning for should know and should be able to provide any forms needed. Start with their HR department who are motivated to get you there to do unpaid work. Also check with any sponsoring organizations. The rules have been changing in a lot of border/travel areas. Good Luck.

I'm pretty certain that you cannot do ANY kind of work, even unpaid on a 90 day visa waiver. Cant remember where I saw that but the USCIS will have it somewhere on their website.
