first time traveller going to be stopping in Beijing for a few days en route to Thailand in February. Im wondering which way is the best to see the great wall of china?? pay for a guided tour? take a taxi? take a bus?? also, does anyone know of any good hotels that are easily accesible from the airport and the great wall, this may be a dumb question but im a first timer. thanks in advance.
If you get a bus tour that goes to the Jinshaling part of the wall and then do the 18km day hike along the wall to the Simatai part. That is a very nice section of the wall to walk along, but do take plenty of water as it is very exhausting.
Have a great trip.
I was in Beijing a couple of months, and there is a great Hostel called Leos hostel. it is quite cheap (about 3pounds a night) and serves great food, has an awesome atmosphere. the hostel is about 2 mins from Tian Men Square, bit of a mission from the airport though.
we found it was best to do to the wall on our own. the guided tours cost about 200RMB, we went to Huanghua. its an area that hasnt been renovated so you get a more real experience, and their arnt tons of tourists. its in the lonely planet page 145, or catch the 961 bus, ask for huanghua, and then catch a taxi up. there are some locals along the wall who charge you to get past their make-shift guard posts, but dont pay more than about 5RMB
