I´m planning on backpacking around Europe, starting with Paris. I was planning on buying a single tent and roughing it. I was looking at campsites too. has anyone done this before? Would you recommend it for a twenty-five year old female on her own?

My instinct would be to say "Hey, go for it!" Having said that, if you were my little sister I would probably smack you about a bit and tell you to come to your senses . . .

Camping isn't always an option. You might want to aim for a mixture of hostels, hotels, camping etc.

Hello Keenyma:)

What u could do, is ask farmers etc, if u can pitch your tent, on their land, or sleep in one of their barns. Maybe people with big gardens will also let u sleep there. That should be safe enough. Although, having said this, people are getting less and less easy going about this. I would not recommend pitching a tent just anywhere. If u want to sleep rough, do not put up your tent. It will make u too noticable. Be discrete, to avoid trouble from locals and police.

If you are going to Italy next month, you can join me. I intend to do just that, after talking to a number of people met on the road who have done it this way.

Hey keenyma,

Where and when do you actually plan to go in Europe?

I'm planning to go sometime in the third week of March 2008. From my country to Paris to start my Euro trip.
In total I think I will spend more than 2 weeks. Here's my rough itinery the cities that I plan to visit.

France : Paris, Nice maybe Monaco too
Spain : Bilbao, San Sebastian, Barcelona
Italy : Venice

I will be backpacking, budget travel for my Euro 2008 trip. I plan to go solo and yes I am a female too. Hope it will be a good trip next year for me! Can't wait

Won't it be pretty cold in Paris third week of March? Like 7C... pretty cold for camping for me!

Wow, 7C that's cold. I don't plan to camp though. Going to cheap hostels under 30 Euros.

So if I plan to wear jeans, top and a jacket over it, that won't be enough right? I need to cover up more huh?

Should I wear boots instead of sneakers then?

I've only been in Europe during the summer so I can't give good advice on the winter. Northern Italy is at about the same latitude as Minnesota so I would guess the weather at the end of March can be pretty unpredictable, either wintery or springlike. If you've never experienced winter temps outside of Malaysia, you may be a little uncomfortable and might need to dress warmer than someone like me from Minnesota who is used to cold weather. Do alot of research before you go. Feeling like you need to spend your vacation indoors would be a bummer.
