-snip- It's illegal but the not well enforced, however if you're caught they would be more than happy to throw you in prison and throw away the key. Especially in Thailand.

It's illegal.

And as we have a strict policy against discussing illegal activities in this forum, I'm afraid this is really not the place to ask.

Not to mention the fact that in my opinion you would be crazy to even consider taking any form of drugs in South East Asia, considering the death penalty or at least life imprisonment is far from unheard of.

I don't think this question is inapporpriate on this forum. For starters, the OP is not saying that he is planing on doing drugs in SEA or encouraging others to join him in doing so. He is simply asking what the laws are and what he should be aware of. Secondly, since many travellers do choose to partake in such (stupid) activites while in Southeast Asia, I think it's important that the travel comunity discuss the illegality of it, so when people are offered drugs abroad (which is quite possible) they can make a responsible, imformed decision.

To answer the question - the answer is yes, it is highly illegal, and if you are caught by authorities, they will take little mercy on you and you will quite possibly spend a good chunck of you life in prison. So just stay away from it. As far as I know (or at least so I've been told) it's also not uncommon to be offered drugs, or be given drugs, by cops, and when you accept be slapped with a pretty hefty fine (bribe) to get out of the situation. So no matter who offers you drugs, just say no.
As well, to answer your first question - I've seen lots of marijuana being grown in the backyards of hill tribe folks in Vietnam, but from Sapa to Koh Phagnan, I've never ever been offered drugs by a local or fellow traveller. Maybe I just look smarter than that so people don't offer it to me.

all illegal. so if u take it, it would be on own risk. I have heard that police could offer drugs as civilian. if u take it u will be arrested. there are (illegal) poppyfields in the triangle near Myanmar. i think its quit dangerous to get/be there.

Erm..... isn't smoking opium perfectly legal in the hills of north thailand? it's a custom still practiced by tribes in that area from my understanding, either way, surely if someone is asking of the legality of the substance in that country, don't we have a duty to tell them? no offence, i think saying "we don't discuss illegal activities" is a bit unnecessary, surely people are here for advice, not to be judged.

agree with that, people are here for advice. besides, smoking opium is indeed used in tribes as a social thing. see it as drinking a beer in the west.

I agree !! .. If you go to laos its on the menu in a lot of places ie opium tea
, magic mushrooms . I think its a good idea if you are planning to party that way to do your research to avoid having a stripy sun tan the rest of your life.
