Hi there...

Can anyone recommend a hostel in San Jose? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You didn't mention a budget, or if you were staying alone or with people. If you have a friend or two, then you can get a room at the Hotel Aranjuez (Aranjuez Hotel) is very nice. We had a superior room for $38 (Double) and that includes a TV in 2004, though prices appear to have gone up a few bucks since then. Free breakfast with someone making you omletes in the morning. They take reservations, but are VERY strict on them - make sure you call to reconfirm when they say. A cab from the airport is $10 - $ 12.

Hello! I am currently in Costa Rica, and was just in San Jose last week. I stayed at Costa Rica Backpackers www.costaricabackpackers.com It was 10 bucks a night for a dorm room. The washrooms are shared. There is a great, cheap restaurant on site, a book exchange, a big sitting area, and an outdoor pool. The staff are helpful, and loads there were loads of other backpackers in the hostel. Check it out! I really enjoyed it there!

Hostel Toruma is one of the few Hostels that have hot western style showers and it is clean. I noticed they maybe doing renovations now. A close second it the Pangea, but it is in a shader neighborhood. But it is clean and quite hip. If the Toruma is reopened when you arrive go there first. It is a good location and great staff. I have bee going there for the past 5 years. It is my first stop when I get off the plane. Excellent base camp!
