I'm going to Vietnam for 3 weeks Oct/Nov this year. I fly into Hanoi and then want to go to Hue, Danang, Hoian and then HCMC. There's loads of info on the net about what to see and do etc etc? Have you any idea if trips/tours are easy to book over there? Also Domestic flights - can you turn up at the airport and fly?
Any advice from somebody that has been would be appreciated.
I spent 3 1/2 weeks in Vietnam last year and did the same places as you're planning to go plus Nha Trang. Trips are really easy to book as there are travel agents (often called 'Sinh cafes') everywhere which can arrange tours for tourists/backpackers. Vietnam is really geared up towards travellers so you won't have a problem arranging whatever you want.
Accommodation is of a really high standard in Vietnam -for $10 you'll get a really decent double room with en suite, tv and often a basic mini bar. Food is also fantastic and cheap!
from Hanoi to Hue its a good idea to get the overnight train - its not expensive and is comfortable way to travel if you get a 'soft' sleeper.
We flew from danang to Nha Trang and booked the day before through our hotel with vietnam airlines. Not sure if you could just turn up for flights as they did seem quite busy when we went.
Hoi An is the place to go if you want clothes made and is a nice little place to spend a few days. Its worth making a side trip to Halong Bay from Hanoi if you have the time - its one of the highlights of Vietnam. Hanoi is a great city - i much preferred it to HCMC. don't think there's much in danang - its more of a gateway to other places. don't miss the cu chi tunnels outside HCMC.
hope all this helps - send me a personal message if you need any more info.
I have to VN 4 times and have plenty of VN photos in my gallery. Take a look and send me a PM if you have questions.
I was in HCM city late last year. Though I have yet to visit Hanoi, the informations that I have is, you can access to several of the major city throughout Vietnam with the Open Bus Tour. The ticket for the whole journey from Hanoi to HCM city should not be more than USD30. You can check this out with the Sinh Cafe in its Hanoi Branch. This ticket allows you to get down at specific towns/cities such as Hoi An, Hue, Danang, Dalat, Nha Trang and HCM city. If you chose to have stays at one of these place, you can do so where the same tour company offers accomodation arrangement. It's your choice. You can opt to stay at your preferred accomodations. However, do make a 1 day advance arrangement for your journey to the next destinations from where you stay. The ticket is valid for all the journeys down to HCM city if you purchased the Hanoi-HCM city ticket, irrespective of how long you spent at one city. I did engaged the Sinh Cafe tour agency during my holiday there and I find it reliable with reasonable pricing. You can check them out once you're in Hanoi. Enjoy your holiday.
