christchurch is nice, a big park and botanical gardens, a nice city to womble around. there's a tram that circles the city, ad a pretty cool craft centre too.
Queenstown is the adrenalin capital - bungee, rafting, snowboarding, you name it they have it.
Arrowtown near QTown is a nicer place to stay IMO. Try a burger in QTown from 'Fergburger' Yummmmm

In Christchurch a visit to the Cathedral is worth doing as well as a trip up to the Port Hills for an overview of the city. Also worth a visit is the Antartic Centre out near the airport. A day trip to Kaikoura to see the whales is an option just be aware you could get seasick. In Queenstown try taking the gondola up to Bob's Peak (if you are an adrenalin junkie then you can go kluge racing up there too.) gives you nice views of the city and the lake. A boat trip on the Earnslaw to Walter Peak passes a few nice hours. After that, as the previous poster said Queenstown is the home the extreme sports crowd.

I skydived into the South Island last week. I was picked up in Wellington and dropped into Picton. $545 was the cost which seemed a bit up there initially but the Wow factor.
