By the way Jess, there is a way to get to Iquitos from Coca, in Ecuador, by boat, but from what i read is ardous and not really recommended

Could you send me more info, Miro? I keep a list of such obscure passages, and this one I only knew of, without further particulars. Much obliged.

It may help to also read the other thread on Iquitos (called '41 days in Pery', or smt), by the way. I posted a suggested itinerary there that I think is feasible, yet rather untouristy.

For what I know, I also have to disagree with some of the other posters re security. SA is macho country, but solo female travellers are usually left alone. Of course, one should NEVER wander too far off the beaten track, but a ride up or down the amazon doesn't qualify as unbeaten track... Still it wouldn't hurt to book a cabin if you can, if only to keep your luggage secure. You have to cope with the looks you're being given, though.

getting slightly incoherent.... back to work it is...

Hey Niels!

The info I have says:

You can get from Coca to Nuevo Rocafuerte (in the border with Peru) by boat (there is a service on mondays and thursdays which takes 9 to 15hs).
Once in Nuevo Rocafuerte, timing is the key! Apparently a cargo boat operates the route Iquitos-Pantoja (which is a short ride from Nuevo Rocafuerte) once a month... So as you can imagine it is not very reliable :) But as we said, it is doable!

Take Care
