Canadian university graduates can apply for a one year work/live visa with Germany...it is a cooperative youth exchange agreement between the countries.

I am not interested in Munich because it is too touristy, nor Berlin or east Germany. I have a decent understanding of German and am graduating with an honours business degree. I'm in my early/mid 20s and looking for a city with culture, atmosphere, nightlife, the best weather i can get, good transit system, urban density, pubs etc...I don't want to get bored too quickly.

I really like the badenwurtemburg as it's close to switzerland, where I can go hiking etc...but i've never been as far north as Hamburg so i'm looking for input. also, Uni towns have a good amount of student hustle and bustle...

What are your thoughts between Hamburg, Koln, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Freiburg, Wurzburg, or Nurnberg?

Hi,

I lived in Frankfurt for a few years. It's a nice city, but expensive and not really that "cultured" and beautiful. However, it is probably the best place to find a halfway decent job if your German isn't that great, as there are lots of international companies there. But apart from that, there are nicer places in Germany to live.

I would go for either Stuttgart or Freiburg, Wonderful cities, the weather is the best in Germany you will find, and you can live there quite cheaply (compared to Frankfurt, Munich or Hamburg). The people are really great, and you will find a lot of unique culture there. Freiburg is one of Germany's leading university cities, so the population is quite young, and it hast a great nightlife and atmosphere. You will find some tourists there, but not even close to Munich or Cologne. Stuttgart is nice as well.

I would certainly go to one of those two if I were you. You might want to check out Heidelberg as well.

If you like to go hiking, look into Stuttgart. Stuttgart has some excellent hiking in the Swabian Alb. Note that Stuttgart is very conservative, it is practically the bible belt of Germany. (I lived in the area for a bit and being a "fishhead" and "northern light" I hated it. You don't notice it at first, but after a few months there ... urgh.) University in Stuttgart is relatively small, but noticeable enough in some areas. Mercedes cars are above everything, since the surrounding towns are firmly in the grip of the Daimler company.

Nurnberg would also be good I think, but since I have never lived there I cannot really judge.
