Many Asian cities are cheap as long as you know how to look, having a place to stay i]like a friends[/i is even better .. but not always possible I know.

My husbands family is from HK and they go back all the time, my husband says that touristy spots in HK are very very expensive ... but that if you stay with the local scene then it can be very cheap.

I'm going to Yokohama this summer, and staying with a friend ... I'll tell you if it was really expensive or not .. but I'm not going until August :P ... I doubt it'll be as expensive as everyone likes to think though. I'm bringing $3,000 for 5 weeks and people said thats MORE than enough [not counting plane ticket .. & I don't have to pay for a hotel].

Personally I would LOVE to go to Seoul. I hear it's not very expensive there ... and I LOVE LOVE Korean culture ... haha I'll go someday ... maybe you should look into Korea : ] Seoul/Pusan ... Korea is small enough so that you can travel all over the country in a short amount of time.

Some things in Hong Kong are cheap compared to western europe (food, for example) but overall Hong Kong is one of asia's more expensive cities.

If you're after cheap for a stopover on the way back to Australia, Bangkok is probably your best bet. Kuala Lumpur is also cheap but I think not quite as interesting for a stopover.

Japan is notoriously expensive.

By South East Asia standards for most things Hong Kong isn't cheap, but then when you compare it to Western Europe, US, Australia, Japan to name a few, well it is relatively cheap (if you stay in a hostel). If you stay in a hotel then the prices are a lot more and certainly not cheap.

It depends if you just want to make a brief stop or if you want to make a bit more of an adventure out of your last bit of time. If it is just for a brief stop before heading back to Australia, then Hong Kong or Bangkok would both be good choices (Bangkok would be my preferred choice out of the two though). That is cheaper than Hong Kong, has more things to see and do in and around the city and is worth a minimum of 5-7 days in my opinion, but Hong Kong on the otherhand deserves a maximum of 3-4 days.

If you do want to make a bit more of an adventure, you could stop in Hong Kong and then make your way down through Vietnam, Thailand until you got to Bangkok and then fly home to Australia. Vietnam is very cheap ($20US to get a bus ticket allowing you to go from the north to the south of the country making many stop overs), has heaps of very nice things to see and has extremely cheap tours that you can do (a full day island hopping tour in Nha Trang was something like $7US and was worth at least 5 times that). A night in a budget hotel was like $5-6US or occasionally you'll find a hostel and that was like $2-3US a night.
