how do you lock your backpack compartments up? I will be travelling with a toploading pack that cinches at the top with a plastic piece and then has a lid that clasps in front (having troubles describing this, but its a pretty standard style backpack). i bought a wire cable and combo lock to secure the bag to fixed places, which will prevent somebody from a quick snatch and run. i am concerned that all the compartments are still vulnerable. how do you lock the top part of the bag?

I generally don't bother about locking my pack; in the cargo space of a bus, it's safe, other than that I'm around to watch over it or it is stored in a decent locker (never stay in a hostel that doesn't offer decent lockers, but that's another story).

In your case, you may want to look into buying a lightweight steel-wire net; it's the only way to keep the contents of your bag somewhat safe (eventually, a knife goes through whatever material your pack is made of).

This is true. When you do put the wire net around your pack (I forgot what it's called) it tends to attract attention from would-be thieves and they often cut through the fabric to get what they want. There really isn't a way to "lock" the top securely besides storing it in a good locker. It's not worth a bother really, just make sure you watch your pack when it's on you

it didnt seem like there was a good way to lock it. i dont really want the wire net because its 1. expensive and 2. eyecatching. it makes you LOOK paranoid, like there are goodies in your bag. i think i'll just stick with the cable/combo lock and keep an eye on the bag.

thanks.

honestly speaking, if anyone wants to take the contents in your bag, they will penetrate it no matter what. i have never used locks for my pack. because there arent going to be expensive stuff inside. probably some stinky clothes and undergarments and if they want to use it, they can go ahead since they are not something indispensable. have you heard of the saying that goes like this :'' the most dangerous place is the safest place, and the safest place is the most dangerous place. '' ? so, your pack may look and feel like its going to attract some unwanted visitors, it may be the safest pack among other packs. on the contrary, you pack may feel the safest, but it probably attracts the most attention like what the previous replies suggests. :] no worries, you should be fine!

Huishan-

I doubt they are so nice. Most of the time they just make off with the whole pack thinking its some treasure inside that pac-safe double locked pack, only to find ur clothes and other stuff us travellers carry.

I really dont think u should lock it, just make it inconspicious ie by drying ur clothes on yr pack like some travellers do or stuff ur dirty loaundry at the top so it will deter them when they open ur pack, and they leave it alone. i think its better this way

yeah..

what i meant was, if anyone wants to steal the contents of your bag, they will steal it no matter what. even if one lock his/her pack, they can still take a knife and cut it through unless your pack is make of hard surface.
