What is health care system like in NZ? to they have Medicare? do you have to pay to see a doctor? and what are the fees for prescription fees like?

yes you do have to pay to see a doctor - around NZ$60 in Auckland. i'm not sure about prescription prices. there's not a medicare system like in oz but i think there is a reciprocal agreement with the UK whereby you can get urgent/emergency treatment free.

{rescriptions are generally around the $15 per item mark.

Be aware that you are also covered by what is known as ACC, even as a visitor - check it out here:

If someone is injured during their visit to our country, they may well be covered by ACC. However, the injury has to have happened on New Zealand soil.

ACC is not a replacement for travel insurance. It only covers injuries, not illnesses, and only while the person remains in New Zealand.

It doesn't cover things like disrupted travel plans and lost deposits, assisted or emergency travel home or travel for a relative
