With only 6 or 7 days, I would say stick to Vientianne, Vang Viang, and Luang Prabang. Only spend a day in Vientianne so you can spend as much time as possible in the other towns.
The bus ride from Hanoi to Vientianne is somewhere around 24 hours and isn't exactly comfortable. And since you have a very short time, it might be best to fly. I don't know if you can fly from Hanoi to Luang Prabang, but if you can that might be a great option. Then you can go LP, VV, to Vientianne, from where you can get a night bus to Bangkok.

I really recommend luang prabang and Vang Viang too, when you get to luang prabang theres a waterfall that you can visit, i think xain ci? Ask about, the locals will know what your going on about, i did the trip a year or so ago and it was amazing!!

We got balloons and blew them up, and bopped them out the back of the van we were in. Tuk tuk with 4 wheels thingey. The kids loved it.

Plus theres a really good spa in the town, its not badly priced, and you can have massages, sauna , facials, anything very cheaply, its not sordid stuff dont worry, there not going to start asking if you want a 'rub and scrub' like in phuket! he he

Also check out the night markets, as always very good - plus theres a trip you can go on the mekong river, its about 6 hours i think in total, you get to a cave and theres loads of budda shrines in there, you have to hike up a mountain to get there, but it good when you see it all. Plus the scenes on the way - wow! And you stop off at a wiskey village and textile village, its really good, but the villages are expensive so watch out!!

Oh oh oh and vang viang, of course - go tubing!! Its the only way to travel! he he

Have fun - wish i was going back!

Vientianne is good, but i agree with Dagolasse, just stay for a day or so, then get the night bus straight up to luang prubang, i think you get to destination at about 5.30am.

Enjoy enjoy enjoy
