pmhlb has indicated that this thread is about Australia

Hello,
I am a Canadian mom, off to Australia to visit her son who is working in the Adelaide area. In addition to a 'family visit', I would like to make this a vacation with a bit of time on the water. If I were to fly to New Zealand, woud I be able to ferry to Adelaide? Where would I find info on the Australia-NZ ferry system? (Is there one?)
Thanks kindly,
Paulette

Sorry Paulette the only ferry would be a fairy with a magic wand. Too much water and too tough to have ferries going across and would take days as well. You have to fly to NZ from Australia and visa versa. Australians love the water but only chance of a ferry ride of any magnitude is from State of Victoria to State of Tasmania across the Bass Strait. You would then have to rail it from Adelaide to Melbourne (Vic) to catch ferry to Tassy. Hope this in some way helps. Any further questions just e mail me. :)

About the best you could hope to do with do a scenic route that meant deliberately going out of your way to go on an expensive ferry. You could fly in to Melbourne, get a trip on the Spirit of Tasmania to Devonport and then after looking around Tasmania get a Jetstar flight from Hobart-Adelaide (would most likely go via Melbourne again as no direct flight to Adelaide from Tasmania). If you wanted to go even more rediculously out of your way, after getting the Spirit of Tasmania to Devonport you could go a long way East to Bridport, catch the ferry that goes to Flinders Island and then wait until they have some cargo to take to Melbourne and get the ferry that occasionally leaves to Port Moresby from Flinders Island (be warned though doing that last bit you may be waiting for weeks on a very quiet and relatively boring island).

Really unless you are really desperate I wouldn't consider doing the stuff I wrote above, because it would cost so much and be such a large detour to go to Adelaide all for a boring time on the ocean.

If you are really that desperate, you could go to the whitsundays (up in Queensland) and do many day cruises on the ocean, but they certainly will set you back a bit if you stay on the islands because accommodation is generally extremely expensive up that way.

Maybe you could catch the ferry from Adelaide to Kangaroo Island?

I have never been there before but it is meant to be nice. Don't think the ferry ride is too long though.

Greetings,
Thanks, everyone. Guess I won't be taking any long ferry rides after all. The one to Kangaroo Island sounds nice.
Cheers,
Paulette
