Whether a city is overrated I think depends a lot on your state of mind, and your own expectations, and of course whether you had a good time.

I've been to places and had an absolute ball, then have returned and been disappointed. It's not the place as such, just my own state of mind and perception.

The only people who seem to rate it are Londoners themselves

I'm not a Londoner and I like London, it depends what you're going for. There are a lot of great places there in my opinion - the British Museum, Westminster Abbey, the Globe Theatre, Tower of London, Tate Modern, the Barbican as well as the live music scene which must be the best in Europe by sheer scale if nothing else. It is expensive, busy, noisy and full of undesirable people, but so is any massive city, I would say the same about Paris and that's my favourite city. I'd certainly rate London ahead of places like Birmingham and Liverpool, which have all the big city downsides but none of the attractions.

Anyway I think James is correct, your perceptions can be changed a lot of the time by chance. For instance one person could step off the train and encounter a steady stream of rude people on their way to their hotel, the person behind them walking in the opposite direction might encounter incredibly friendly people. The city would be exactly the same but one person would say it's full of friendly people and the other would have an entirely different perception.

A lot of people think that London is overrated.

Just wondering why they think that?

Because it's a city without a warm feeling and really beautiful places to be. It has all the amenities you aspect from a city that big, but even the 'highlights' are as boring as english tea with milk!

The most overrated place in Europe -- without any doubt -- is Rome.

Except for the museums and churches/palaces, it has nothing. People are very unfriendly (even Milan is friendlier, and Venice is so by far), food is banal (both Southern and Northern Italy have much better food), it is dirty (facades, pavements), chaotic... Outside of the centre it looks like an African slum (not a nice city in Africa!).

The most underrated place is possibly the Norwegian pearl of Art Nouveau architecture, Aalesund, followed by Glasgow (which for some very weird reason is often placed second to Edinburgh, even though Glasgow surpasses Edinburgh in everything except -- perhaps -- for the Festival and the one cathedral in Edinburgh Old City).

Of capital cities, the most underrated are probably Bucharest and Belgrade.

Oh, I disagree and I know of many beautiful places in London. Here are some:

- Green Park on a Spring day
- Green Park on a Winter day
- Hammersmith Bridge
- the walk from Hammersmith Bridge to Putney
- a walk through Hammersmith Cemetery on a winter's afternoon.

Even though some of your observations aren't that far from the truth, I don't see why that would make Rome overrated. Sure, it's dirty and the city burocracy is complete disaster (I lived there); but I don't agree that the people are unfriendly. Only those working in the tourist industry are, but that's exactly the same in most other big cities I've ever been to. And as to food... well, let's say you've been to all the wrong places :)
