Yup, you need a visa, and you need to have it in advance. You won't be allowed on the plane if you don't have it before hand.

July and August is generally the worst time in India, however, Ladakh is at its prime in July, and Rajasthan is fine in August. So I would recomend spending your first month in the mountains, and your second in Rajasthan.

u need to visit the an Indian embassy or consolate in UK. perhaps there are also other ways to get the visa, for instance via a travelagency.

Hey, you can get a visa from the embassy in London or consulate in Birmingham if you live close by. Alternatively there is a consulate in Endinburgh. They usually offer a same day service, but get there EARLYYY. Be prepared for a chaotic scence!!! ;)

Dani,

July and Aug are rainy season in most parts of India.

Suggest you to go through a guide book and select the places that interest you. Then more better suggestions can be given.
