I have 3-4 days after La Tomatina, Switzerland or Austria?

Travel Forums Europe I have 3-4 days after La Tomatina, Switzerland or Austria?

I'm going to La Tomatina in Valencia Spain on the 29th of August. Will leave Valencia the next day (30th of August), coming back to US on the 3rd of Sept.

What country should I goto with my remaining 3.5 days?

I will have a friend in Vienna (moving in July) that I can crash at, so that's good, saves me a $150-200, but flying out there costs a little more than flying out of Zurich or Geneva

I'd like to do some hiking in the Swiss Alps, I was thinking of stopping in Bern for 3 days.

If you had the choice, would you goto Vienna or Bern?

I was looking at train times, it takes about 16-18 hours from Valencia to Bern and about 26-35 hours! to get to Vienna (prob better for me to just fly out)

Or do you guys think I have enough time to do both Vienna and Bern? IE, get to Bern by the 1st (overnight trip), hike for the day and take a night trip to Vienna. Spend the night there and fly out from Vienna on the 3rd?

I really like Bern and Vienna, but both really require a bit more time than just one day so I would say you should just pick one and enjoy it rather than rushing around trying to sort out trains and what not. It really depends on what you want to do though as to which you pick. Vienna is great for museums and in particular history. If you're interested in 18th/19th century history the Hofburg and Schoenbrunn Palace are must sees, if you like classical art or museums in general then the Kunsthistorisches Museum is one of the best in the world. All told I'd say Vienna is probably my favourite big city that I've visited (excepting Paris) and well worth spending a few days in.

Bern on the other hand is small, pretty quiet, but incredibly scenic and relaxing and if you want to go hiking in the alps then there are few better places to stay as you're only an hour or so away by train from some of the most attractive scenery in Europe. There are also plenty of museums both in Bern and in Luzern which is close enough to visit as a daytrip. Personally, Bern is the nicest place I've ever visited on a trip, I love getting up in the morning, eating one of the (excellent) sandwiches sold everywhere and getting on the train to go visit somewhere in the Alps, but it's not for everyone and many people would say it's quite dull, particularly as far as nightlife is concerned. It just depends on your preferences, but whichever one you pick I'm sure you'll enjoy.

Actually, that's exactly what i want to do in Bern.. is go hiking! I'd like to do a overnight trip in the Alps if i can. What other town should I stay in if I'm just looking for some outdoor fun? Don't really care much about the night scene, I didn't spend a few thousand to go clubbing when I can do it here in Seattle, lol.

I don't think I'm going to goto Vienna because it takes too long to get there from Valencia. So Bern it is! BTW, I might do a day in Geneva or Zurich, which city?

You say you go for Bern, but I just want to add, that a bit closer to Valencia you could go hiking in the Sierra Nevada. On the Southside is an area called the Alpujarras, which is beautiful.

(just adding an option).
