Spain - Safe at night?

Travel Forums Europe Spain - Safe at night?

MarleneMax has indicated that this thread is about Spain

I'm a Canadian girl and this summer I'll be in Spain by myself visiting 7 cities (barcelona, seville, granada, valencia...). I'll be travelling to each destination by train. By the time I get to my destination, it's already evening, night time and some of the hostels are within walking distance. After stepping out of the train station, am I safe walking with my luggage, bags searching for my hostel lodging? I'm afraid of being robbed. Should I consider of trying to arrive before the sun goes down?

thanks

Hi Marlene,

Usually it is not a problem to walk at night. Just use common sense, and I think it is enough.

Aitor

Hi Marlene

I don't think it's a good idea to go searching for a hostel in the dark with bags by yourself anywhere in the world. I would book somewhere ahead or arrive in daylight. Particularly in Granada, where there have been a few 'incidents' in the albaicin quarter.

Spain is a fab country to visit though, and relatively safe. Have a great trip!

Yes, for sure. I have been a lot of times in Spain at night with bags and never had a problem. It is for that that I said to use common sense.

I would agree, just use common sense! No where is totally safe these days...

I was in Spain last summer and I had a great time! not a single problem.... But I am a bloke!

Andalucia was great, Granada was very nice!

We used to go out late at night and there were never any issues. We went to a festival that was on through out the night and wwe did not see any problems out there! ?

I love Spain!

Thanks everyone. I'm so looking forward to my 3-week visit to Spain. I'll definitely keep my eyes peeled and wits open. I'll probably have to drink lots of soda to keep myself energized and awake. =)

Don't worry about it, I haven't been at night in every city of your list but Valencia is at night as safe as with daylight, not dangerous at all, and I thing the others won't be an exception.
So don't worry and enjoy your trip Marlene.

I don't know if those cities are far enough away from each other, but you might want to look into taking night trains between some of the places. You just get on the train late-ish at night, fall asleep and get to a new city in the morning. It saves on accommodation as well..

The only place out of those you listed that I'd be a little more cautious is Madrid...

Don't get me wrong I loved spain and felt safe the entire time I was there, but I did meet a few solo females in Madrid who had had some uncomfortable moments after dark.:(

I'd agree with nearly all that's gone before. Spain is fundamentally a very safe country. But there is a rotten apple in every basket, so just be ever-so-slightly on your guard. I don't think lugging your suitcase around is too much of a problem because street criminals are the same the world over: they're much more interested in your money, credit cards and maybe passport than the contents of your luggage. When you are laden down with luggage, do make sure that you don't leave your handbag vulnerable.

Have a wonderful time!
