Saw the Sunday Times rich list today. the ten richest people in the UK are worth £70 billion between them. Easily enough to eradicate poverty in the UK. Why can't they make do with a few million each and stop the poorest from living such desperate lives? Life is bizarrely unfair sometimes.

Assuming there are 5 million "poor people" in the UK, 70 billion pounds equals 14,000 pounds each.

In fact, if each of these people spent 38 pounds each per day, the money would be gone in a year.

Not enough to eradicate poverty.

Well, by the government's own definition, about 14 million live in 'relative poverty', and just over 2 million in 'absolute poverty'. So I guess you couldn't just dole out the cash. But some of that money would go a long way towards helping the very poorest families.

unfortunately people only want more and are mostly selfish. so don't expect them to share. that is just nature of human to survive.

I thought the richest one had 'only' about 2 billion? That way, 70 billion would be impossible for the first 10. Just a detail.

For the poor-rich thing. Like wouter said, just a way of surviving, some people have luck, some don't, some people are just stupid, others know what to do with their heads.
Don't forget that lots of people who are poor, just don't know how to handle with money; they gamble, drink, have 23 children, are too lazy to work, use drugs etc. etc.
Don't think rich people should compensate for that, more something for the government, and even that's not what I would like to see.
Flattening of incomes means socialism, or in the worst case communism. Some countries already tried that or are still thinking that's worth trying. See what happened/happens.

Look at it from another angle: to sit on such an amount of money is one thing, to spend it is another.
One way or the other, a lot of people are taking a slice of the cake. You can't eat more than 3 times a day, and to clock up a huge expense 24/7 to squander such cash is an exercise which will sooner benefit the cardiologist, undertaker and banker. In that order.
You won't eradicate poverty by distributing cash to the poor. The right thing, which many "rich" people do, is to invest in schools, industries, hospitals.

Dinesh Mittal alone is apparently worth £19bn - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6603893.stm

I'd say that it's more a lack of positive role models, opportunities and education than anything else. Plus, some people have truly bad luck in their lives.

I don't think any well adjusted, optimistic person with a fair bit to live for would gamble or take drugs to the point that they become poor. These activities are mostly a sign of underyling hopelessness.

I dont mind others being very rich in itself, but those who become very rich owners of companies and industries, but are underpaying their staff, and exploiting people in the third world....:(

Why do people place it upon the super rich to dole out their cash? The middle class wants nothing to do with generally. What if every single person in England above poverty gave some money to the poor - that would be more egalitarian that complaining about the "rich" not sharing.

Also I would say that anyone browsing this website certainly makes the "rich" list. If you have a bank account you make the "rich" list.
