Hi folks,

Is it possible to get the odd bit of paid work while doing a road trip across the USA, Boston to LA? I'm only looking for a bit of casual work (cleaning etc.) to help with fuel, food etc, or is it strict work visa policy? Cheers

Hey,

It is 'possible' for find work like that. However if you are caught, your visa will be nullified, you will be thrown out of the country and it will jeopardize your chances of ever visiting legally here again.

Now with that said, you can discreetly ask businesses for such work and they will pay you cash under the table. Watch out for businesses who refuse to pay you after the work is done, so make sure you get paid on a daily/weekly basis for work done. I had a 'friend' who worked with no visa and did some work. After all the work was done, his boss refused to pay (they had a lump sum agreement, with contract...). Took the boss to court and won. Had issues collecting because it cost more to collect (collection agencies, etc...) then what was owed....

Now, if you are ever screwed over by an employer, you can go to the local police/courts. Most jurisdictions here don't care about your visa status; if you had a contract with the employer for X work for Y dollars and they refuse to pay... well that is a breach of contract irrelevant of your visa status...

NOW, before I get flamed... I'm NOT for illegal immigration or working in the US without a valid working visa. However IF you are going to do it anyway, be safe about it. Make sure you have a written agreement with the business; if you get screwed over, the police/courts WILL help you. Generally the threat of official involvement will get them to cooperate; they get into as much trouble as you do... Again let me stress that if you get caught by INS, sanctions can vary from simple deportation to detention...

yes it is VERY possible to get odd jobs. actually, anything is possible if you put your mind to it, right? lol. anyway... first look on craigslist. you never know, there might be someone needing some help here and there in whatever city you are in. craigslist has saved me time and money in so many occasions!!!

also, if you're just working odd jobs here and there and not for long periods of time, you won't have to worry about "getting caught" unless you're totally unlucky. i've worked in la and san francisco all of my working career. and i worked with "illegal" people all the time... filipinos, mexicans, europeans, etc. i worked in the restaurant and hotel business, though...

anyway... it hsouldn't be difficult AT ALL. especially since you can speak english, too..
