So i was watching some surf footage the other day, and saw kelly slater holding this awesome looking small digital camera while on his surf board filming/capturing other surfers, this made me realise how diverse my pictures can be while travelling with a water proof camera...

so can anyone advise any that they have used before.. no budget as of yet, as im very niave on how much such cameras can cost...

many thanks!

If I were you, I'd buy a camera chosen by it's qualities, and then look for an extra on-the-side waterproof housing. That way you can use the camera without the bulky WP case on land, and when you need it you just put the case on - and you're camera's ready for any pro surfer to use.

very good idea, but im sure not every camera made has an optional waterproof casing to match its size and dimension...

dilema really...i dont wanna be spending 100's of pounds on one but then again i want my pictures to be good for my diary etc...

tho i wont be looking to get one till the end of the year so purhapse ive looked into this a tad bit early..

for waterproof cameras you dont need a housing.
with a waterproof camera you dont dive deep, the are only good for a few meters, but if you go for surfing or snorkling or just to a beach then the are good.

New to the forum, saw this post and I thought I would chime in.
The wife and I do a ton a picture taking on our vacations. She is using a Nikon D70, I was relegated to the pocket Canon Digital Elph.
Anyhow, I decided to replace our old digital elph with a newer version and came to find out that Canon makes a whole line of underwater cases for it Digital Elph line.
I decided on the Powershot SD800 IS (IXUS 850IS) because of its image stabilization and 28-105mm lens. Purchased the camera for a little over $300 USD.
The waterproof case is effective to 130ft and was an additional $179 USD. A relative bargain for a true underwater case.
These cases do require a lot of TLC
Hope this helps

If you already have your waterproof camera, I suggest you go more than just surfing. Go, dive! There's a lot under the water that you need to capture with a camera.

alot of the waterproof cameras have heaps of neat features, like being crush proof, plus you don't need to keep worrying about taking housing on and off. i'm thinking about getting one- and i'd imagine that it would be mighty convenient no to have to worry about minor splashes etc, and i'm pretty sure they cost just as much as a camera + housing would
