My wife and I have about a month to explore Egypt, Israel and Jordan. Does anyone have suggestions for not to be missed places or an itinerary?

Thanks.

I can only advise on Jordan but don't miss:

-Jerash
-Karak Castle
-Petra (allow for 2 full days at least)
- Wadi Rum

If you have time you could also try and fit in Madaba, MT Nebo, the Dead sea, and Dana Nature reserve.

I can't really advise on not to miss places, but a not to miss experience is doing a felucca trip either up or down the Nile in Egypt. I did one from Aswan-Edfu and the got the short van ride to Luxor. I can't tell you the cost as mine was included in a tour I arranged in Egypt. This journey went for 3 days and 2 nights but was a nice relaxing experience.

I've heard Petra is a not to miss place, but haven't been there.

I guess it depends on what you are wanting out of your trip as to not to miss things, because if relaxation is what you want some of then maybe a stop in Dahab in the Sinai region. When there you can do scuba diving, lounge by the water front on cushions, see a few nice things but the main thing apart from scuba diving and snorkelling people go there for is to see the sunrise from the summit of Mount Sinai. If you do that make sure you bring warm clothes even if it was a scortching hot day because it is freezing up there.

Have a great trip.

In Egypt: Abu Simbel is a must. Overnight there and go in the late afternoon. We did it in the summer and even the guards left, we were alone and it was so spiritual it was amazing. The temple at Abydos is also a must see. I would suggest that you take a few days in Cairo and around, see the Egyptian museum and head to Luxor. Spend two days around luxor seeing the temples and tombs and wondering around on your own or with a local guide. Take a 4 day nile cruise to Aswan. You will see some of luxor with the cruise so get the itiniary before, so you don't duplicate. There are some lovely tombs of nobles etc. that are just not covered with the cruises due to time. Two and a half weeks will get you the main sites in Egypt. Make all reservations in Egypt on arrival as is is maybe 1/4 the price.

In Jordan, give yourself two days at Petra. It is a lot bigger than you think and very interesting. Jerash is a lovely Roman city, Amman is very interesting, Kerak was nice although I didn't really appreciate being locked in the dark! Spend some time at the Dead Sea resorts. I stayed at the Moovenpick and I could have stayed there for a lot longer! The spa was to die for!

Hi,
In Jordan, Petra and the area around it are a must see and at least 2 days should be spent there. Part of the Indiana Jones series was filmed there. Swimming in the Dead sea is a must and some of the spa's in the area are great. The history that surrounds the area make a trip to Mt. Nebo and the Jordan river and John the Baptist spring a must also. The diving at the southern end of Jordan is very nice with several good mapped sites. The water is cooler there than further south though. Lisa gives a good list for Egypt. I would do Isreal last because of potential visa problems with other Middle Eastern countries if you have an Isrealie stamp anywhere in yours. You can get around this of course but on occasion they make mistakes and may inadverantly stamp your passport on a non removeable page and then you will not be able to visit the other countries. In Isreal you must see the Holy city and aslo Massada. This is where it all began so do your homework and see as much as you can.

I agree with Jakalo but would also say in regards to Israel, you have to be careful about the stamps not only into Israel but out of Egypt and Jordan. At the border crossings last year in Syria and Lebanon, my prior travel to Egypt as well as Jordan was heavily scrutanized. If you have any interest in seeing any countries that prohibit travel with Israel, I would say pass entirely and/or get a new passport and make sure to fly in an out as opposed to land cross. My fear is that now with all of the anti terror requirements, that governments will store your crossings electronically. I am POSITIVE that the US gov't knows exactly where I have been, and I am reasonably sure that most other governments will as well.
