How rough and crime riddled, is it? If u have been there, what is your experience?
Is it as bad, as I have been told.
I am going there, next week.
I was there, around 15 years ago.
At the time, it was not any worse, than any part of Italy.
Has it deteriorated?
We only drove through as we'd heard bad things about it. Try the Amalfi coast - it's right next door and too pretty for words.
I am only going to be in Naples, for 2 nights. But if it really is so bad, then if the Amalfi is not too far, by train..... A daytrip maybe.
Does anybody know, if it is mostly at night, that the crime is? Is it OK, during the day, in Naples?

It's not as bad as all that. I've always really liked Napoli, as it is a real city, as opposed to a "disney" city. I've been there 5 or 6 times (admittedly not since 2003, i think), and never really felt any less safe than London, for example. Admittedly pickpockets are a major problem, but in fairness, i'd say Firenze was actually worse. There are chunks of the city you should probably avoid wandering around alone &/or after dark, but there are in most cities. In the vast majority of non pickpocketing (or, i suppose muggings, which in Napoli are essentially the same thing, except that you know whats happening instead of realising 10mins later) cases, most of the incidents don't involve tourists or bystanders. Just keep your wits and use common sense and you should be fine.
I am relieved, to hear at least one person say it is not as bad as all that.
I will be careful. Maybe I wont go out at night, just in case.
Hi Mel! My husband and I too heard lots of horror stories of Naples - so we head straight out to the Amalfi Coast after we got our rented car from the airport. It was lovely at the Amalfi Coast - though certain stretch of the roads were pretty narrow and it seemed hazardous to me!!
Anyway, back to the topic - we spent the night in Naples the day before we were due to leave and somehow we got lost. We were driving along a one-way street near a market (can't remember the name now), a guy in a scooter went by our car and somehow knocked into our side mirror thus flipping it outwards. He turned back and smiled apologetically, so I just waved him away thinking it was an accident. So, I wound down my window to adjust the side mirror and within that split second another guy came from behind and reach through the open window to grab my day sack off my lap and then ran to his accomplice on another scooter near by and sped off! I was in total shock - it happened so quickly. To think that we were being so careful (windows up, doors locked). So, just be very careful and if you are thinking of driving - lock your doors and don't be tempted in any way to get out of your car!
Well, to be honest - it's not so much of the lost camera, I was more disappointed with the fact that they were so many people nearby, no one helped or even gave us a second glance. It was as though it was the way of life there.
Either ways, have a good time and be safe!
That is awful. I am going to be as careful, as possible. Certainly no wandering around, after dark. I hope I can find something to wear, that will conceal my moneybelt enough. Not easy, with Summer clothes.
yeah i heard naples is dirty and crime ridden, so im just bypassing it and going to pompeii and the amalfi coast. tho ive heard the archaeological museum is really good, if youre into that sorta thing...
Be careful. Try not to seem a turist. and don't take with you expensive clock, bag, etc...
however... Naples is beautiful.
