I've heard good things about kayaking the Saguenay fjords in Quebec. The scenery is supposed to be breathtaking and there are guides that take small to medium expeditions up the fjords for a week or more. The weather will still be warm in September (not like Thailand, though!), and you can always venture off to Quebec City or Montreal (or all the villages between) when you're looking for people and places to hang out.

May not be what you're looking for, but just in case!

Hi,

You could consider McLeodganj or Manali in Himachal Pradesh, India. They've got some of the most beautiful mountain trails in India.

Last time I was at McLeodganj, I think it was September. It rained a little but it was great. The town also is very nice with nice road-side cafes to just sit around and have coffee/beer. Its the seat of the Dalai Lama so there are lots of Tibetans. Nice people. Nice place.

Both Manali and McLeodganj are the starting points to some awesome treks.
