Hi Everyone! I finally took the leap and booked my tickets to Australia (Dec. 26-Mar.3) and also just booked the Base Backpackers hostel in Sydney for the first 7 days of my visit... the only problem I am encountering is that I can't find a hostel available on the 31st of Dec. Guess my question would be... should I risk not having a place to stay and just see what happens or should I spend the chunk of money to stay in a hotel for the night (obviously it will be pricey since it's New Years Eve)
Let me know your thoughts if you have a chance... kind of feeling lost right now :) Thanks!

Okay you could stay up all night and then not worry about going to sleep that night or then you have to be serious and think about where you are going to leave your belongings. Sydney is a very big place and you are right, it is going to be very expensive trying to find somewhere. My guess is to look for a motel or hotel in the suburbs but then you are going to have to get a taxi home at some stage and they will cost an arm and a leg. So what do you do? If you are getting into Sydney on December 26 then I am assuming you have somewhere to stay until December 31. Why not ask someone at that place if they have room for you for a night or could you share some floor space etc. Be wary of just hoping someone will feel good on the night about giving you somewhere to sleep. Sydney is like any other place. When the festivities are on young women can be at the mercy of unscrupulous young or old men.

Just had a quick look out of interest, and this place still has room by the looks of it;

There might be more on as well, that's the first one I saw.

Good luck!

Thank you both for these great suggestions... very helpful, the nerves have calmed a little and research resumes. :)

Yeah it comes down to what you plan to do on NY eve. Getting a room is going to be problematic and they are exy. There is a litle secret B&B right in the heart of town called the Australian Heritage Hotel in the rocks which is beautiful, above a great pub.

Not sure if you will get a room.

Make friends with someone with a sofa if you want. But staying up all night may be the next solution.:)

If you need to stash your stuff, you can put it in a locker in one of the train stations.

Or do the old backpacker trick of getting a train at 4am out of town and coming back - sleepign the whole way.

Im flyin to Oz in August, and will either be in Syd or MelB. Does any1 no if it would be any easier finding accom. in Melbourne instead of Syd on NewYears?
