I don't know about the caves, but definitely the Petronas Towers are a "must see". I visited the Towers and I tell you what, they are amazing, and you get such a great view of KL from there. You should do it, you won't regret, trust me.

I will be in KL for two days before BKK - one will probably be spent sleeping off jet lag! but can anybody recommend anything we could do in the second day?

You get jet lag flying from BKK to KUL?!

I think that they mean that they are in KL for a stopover before heading onto BKK, i.e. they have flown to KL from a place quite far away.

...i think

Batu Caves is a nice place. You can reach it by bus #11 from Bangkok Bank bust stop (near Masjid Jamek).
Also, I recommend not to waste your time on Petronas (long time for waiting, bad view). Better pay 20 ringgit for Menara - good view (include Petronas), good and fast service. Best time - 18:30. You can see KUL in daylight, then wait for a while, and get breathtaking night view!

IMHO, also "must see" places are: Merdeka Square, ChinaTown (and Bukit Bitang), Little India.
